Toastmasters meetings often have an announced theme then take on a theme of their own.
If you can herd cats, you can keep a meeting on theme to enrich the meeting and provide continuity to the meeting.
cider and donuts was a theme last fall
It is neither possible or practical to tie each meeting speech into the theme. A speech lineup is like Forrest Gump's take on a box of chocolates - " you never know whatcha gonna get."
Asking a member to contribute briefly about the meeting theme before they speak in their assigned role is a nice touch. It provides an opportunity to talk outside of the role. The main ramification is to allow speaking without pressure.
Everybody gets to know the member as he or she discusses how the meeting theme relates to their lives and experiences. Without realizing it, members hone their story telling skills. It's really fun to watch people add to what others have said.
Table Topics are fine, but they are dreaded by most. All the bandwidth gets used up just to talk about the topic. Unlike Table Topics, there is time to ruminate how to talk about the theme while awaiting one's turn.
Best of all, the humor writes itself as people reach for bizarre ways to tie in to the theme.
